Supernovae As Bright as a Galaxy
The sequence shows the rapid brightening and slower fading of a supernova explosion in the galaxy NGC 1365.

During this event, the brightness of the star (or rather the supernova) increases billions of times, often rivalling the brightness of the entire galaxy of which it is a part. The brightness then diminishes over the course of hundreds of days.

It's interesting to note that, according to current calculations, every star in the 8-15 solar mass range will eventually explode in a Type II supernova.
