This v-shaped group of stars was once a separate constellation. Its brief existence began in the late 18th century when Abbe Poczobut, a Polish astronomer, asked the French academy to honour Stanislaus Poniatowski, the last Polish king, with a constellation; but by the end of the 19th century it was no longer officially recognized. The Bull of Poniatowski lies between Ophiuchus and Serpens-Cauda. The stars 66, 67, 68, and 70 Ophiuchi form the asterism.
