The Beehive is a beautiful open star cluster, faintly visible to the naked eye and thus known since prehistoric times. The Beehive is also known as Praesepe, which is Latin for manger. The Greeks and Romans saw the manger together with two asses eating from it: Gamma Cancri is the Northern Ass, and Delta Cancri is the Southern Ass. In one myth, the Roman gods Dionysus and Silenus rode on two asses into battle against the Titans, whose fear of the animals aided in their victory. As a reward, the asses were put in the sky together with Praesepe, the Manger.
