Mercury is the closest planet to the sun. Its small orbit averages just over one-third the diameter of Earth's. But, unlike Earth's orbit, Mercury's is highly eccentric or elongated, ranging from 46 million kilometers (27.6 million miles) to 70 million kilometers (42 million miles). It is the smallest of the eight planets.
