Mercury is named after the Roman god of travel, and the planet might have got this name because it moves so quickly across the sky. At different times of the year Mercury can be seen as a "morning star" just before sunrise or as an "evening star" just after sunset.

Look for Mercury one hour after sunset or one hour before sunrise low in the horizon. Binoculars are a great aid in locating Mercury during the periods in which it is visible.
