There are three kinds of solar eclipse: partial eclipse, annular eclipse, and total eclipse. In a partial eclipse, only part of the sun is covered by the moon.

Because the moon's penumbra is so much larger than its umbra, this type of eclipse is more common than total solar eclipses, when the moon covers the entire disk of the sun.
