Apollo 14 entered lunar orbit on February 4, 1971. Unlike previous missions where the Lunar Module lowered its orbit to the 50,000-foot altitude where it would begin its descent, the Service Module engine was used to lower both spacecraft. This saved lunar module fuel and gave the Lunar Module more time to hover while landing. This was done for all future landing missions.
