Astronauts Shepard and Mitchell performed two moonwalks. During the first excursion, they set up the American flag and deployed an ALSEP experiment package similar to the one deployed on Apollo 12.
During the second moonwalk, the astronauts headed toward Cone Crater, a large crater 1.3 km (approximately 1 mile) away from the lunar module. They wanted to sample lunar materials on the edge of the crater. These rocks, which originated far below the surface, would have been excavated to the surface when the crater was formed.
At the end of the second moonwalk, astronaut Shepard attached a six iron golf club head to one of his lunar sample collection tools and hit a few golf balls he had brought with him. These were the first golf shots on the moon. Not to be outdone, Mitchell threw another tool as if it were a javelin. Although the lunar gravity would allow you to hit a golf ball six times farther than on Earth, the bulky moon suit prevented Shepard from getting a good swing.
