On the trip back from the moon, the Apollo 15 astronauts were able to watch a total eclipse of the moon; they were the first people ever to do so from space. Jim Irwin commented on the eclipse to astronaut/astronomer Karl Henize in Mission Control.
Irwin: Right now the moon is sort of - varies from sort of a very pale orange to a good deep burnt orange on one side and a very gradual change. And I hope the - the photos come out because it - it certainly is pretty.
Capsule Communicator / Astronaut Karl Henize: Very good. It sounds like a beautiful view from up there. You've seen a lunar eclipse of the moon twice as big as anyone else has ever seen such an eclipse.
(The moon appeared 1 degree in diameter during the eclipse)
