Moon Missions: Apollo 15 Lunar Surface Activities

Scott and Irwin would perform three lunar walks.

On the first moonwalk, they unloaded the lunar rover from the side of the Lunar Module. They then traveled to a site near the rille to do some exploring and sampling of lunar material. They returned to the Lunar Module and set up an ALSEP experiment package.

A television camera mounted on the rover could be controlled independently by Mission Control. It returned some spectacular views of the crew working on the lunar surface. Every time the crew parked the rover, they had to repoint their TV transmission antenna.

On the second moonwalk, they drove the lunar rover to the Apennine Front.

On the final moonwalk, they drove to the rille and sampled along the edge of Hadley Rille.

Their total moonwalk time was 18 hours 34 minutes. They returned 77.3 kg (35 pounds) of lunar samples and drove their rover 28 km (17.5 miles).
