Two hours and fifty minutes into the mission, after a thorough check of their systems by Mission Control, the third stage was reignited for five minutes, sending the first humans out of Earth orbit on the way to the moon.

The spacecraft separated from the third stage at 3:21 Mission Elapsed Time (MET). The empty stage was commanded from mission control to move away from Apollo 8, miss the moon, and remain in orbit around the sun.
