Galileo plunged into Jupiter's crushing atmosphere on September 21, 2003. The spacecraft was intentionally destroyed to protect one of its most important discoveries, a liquid ocean below the icy crust of Jupiter's moon Europa.

Destroying the spacecraft in a controlled fashion prevented Galileo from colliding with Europa and possibly contaminating its liquid ocean, which might harbor extraterrestrial life.
