Once fusion starts, stars begin to convert the hydrogen in their cores into helium. It is in this state that the star spends most of its life, fusing its mass into heavier and heavier elements, all the way up to iron. At this point, no further energy can produced through the process of nuclear fusion, and the star begins the last phase of its life.
